News From PIAC - November 2023

PIAC met with Innovative on November 20, 2023.

Polaris 7.5

Polaris 7.5 is out! This update has several new workflow options including a new weeding workflow, options to declare an item damaged, and the ability to create hold pickup areas for self-serve lockers or drive-thru windows. Check out the What’s New in Polaris 7.5 documentation for all of the details.

Polaris TOMs

As Vega Discover grows, the differences in how Polaris and Sierra handle bibliographic formats are becoming more apparent. PIAC and Innovative briefly discussed some of the potential options for development down the road as it relates to the Type of Material (TOM).

Innovative has had internal conversations about additional development but they stressed the importance of using the enhancements process. Given the amount of ideas currently in the backlog, prioritization is essential to help demonstrate the importance of certain features over others. All users are encouraged to use the Idea Exchange to vote/comment and select the priority (e.g., Critical, Important, Nice to Have) on ideas that are valuable to them. This is true even if the idea is older or already marked as "future possibility,” because it helps to define the priority for those ideas compared to newer submissions.

There are currently two ideas for improving TOMs on the Idea Exchange:

Leap Approval Dashboard

With Polaris 7.5, Leap now has a new menu option known as the “Approval Dashboard.” This new workflow allows staff without appropriate permissions to waive fines or withdraw items to request that change from a colleague who can approve or deny the request. This prompted a conversation about further development to expand the use of the Approval Dashboard.

If library staff have ideas on features that can be added to the Approval Dashboard (such as requesting cataloging changes), please post them to the Idea Exchange.

PIAC will not meet in December. Watch for the next update in January 2024!
