Syndetics vs ContentCafe for book jacket images

We’re looking at switching our cover image provider and are curious which services the community is using the most.

If you have a few moments and can complete the following poll and share any experiences, I’d appreciate it.

Which provider do you use?

  • Syndetics
  • ContentCafe (Baker & Taylor)
  • Chilifresh
  • Other (Reply w/Details)

What Discovery Layer do you primarily use?

  • PowerPAC
  • Bibliocommons
  • Encore (Sierra)
  • WebPAC (Sierra)
  • Other (Reply w/Details)

Hi Wes,

We’re “Other” for both questions so here’s my reply with Details. Our discovery layer is a home-grown one developed by our consortium and expanded upon by us. It exists as part of our Drupal install on our website and integrates with a number of our other services.

Our consortium also hosts a cover images server for us that uses multiple image sources including Syndetics Unbound and Overdrive (ebooks, e-audiobooks, and e-magazines). This also allows us to upload our own cover images for things like book club kits, toys, and other items that aren’t served by the major content providers.

Thanks for your reply and the details! It did get my wheels turning about some sort of homemade reverse image cover proxy that could allow for greater flexibility.

Wes, we primarily use Vega for our discovery layer (got rid of Encore). That comes with Syndetics for free. For our WebPAC (which is not a discovery layer), we use Baker & Taylor Content Cafe for cover images/summaries and also NoveList Select for the related content (related authors, etc.). I will say NoveList Select content is superior to Syndetics (better recommendations), but Vega is Syndetics only at this point.
