Program Title: Applied SQL: How One Library is Using Sierra Direct SQL Access to Troubleshoot Issues and Collect Statistics
ILS: Sierra
Program Description: Do you find Create Lists too limiting for collecting statistics and analyzing your collection? Have you heard about Sierra Direct SQL Access but aren’t sure how it’s used to identify and solve issues with bibliographic, item, patron, and other types of records? This presentation will demonstrate a variety of SQL queries being used by librarians at the University of Colorado Colorado Springs to analyze their print collection, collect monthly checkout statistics, identify duplicate ebook and patron records, assess staff permissions, and more.
The presenter will demonstrate the following queries:

  • Generating an itemized list and aggregate statistics of the previous month’s checkouts, including materials circulated via INN-REACH for better understanding how your physical collection is being used, by which types of users, and the busiest times and days of the week.
  • Queries that lists all the permissions assigned to your staff in a format that allows you to compare permission assignments across all staff members.
  • A query for identifying duplicate ebooks in your collection available through multiple vendors.
  • A query for identifying duplicate patron barcodes.
  • A ‘weeding’ query that calculates the average age of an item and its cost per use.
  • Queries for analyzing collection usage by decade of publication, by fund code, by subject headings, and more.
